Ghosts of Cape Cod: 8 Stops for a Haunted Road Trip this Halloween

Cape Cod’s Ghost Trail Map
8 Top Spooky Spots to Visit this Halloween on Cape Cod

When autumn falls across Cape Cod, the wind grows colder, the nights stretch longer, and the past feels closer. The Cape’s villages and shorelines hold centuries of shipwrecks, restless spirits, and stories whispered by candlelight. From a haunted colonial jail to a lighthouse cliff where ghostly figures pace, these eight chilling stops — plus two guided ghost tours confirmed for 2025 — will take you straight into the Cape’s darker side.

1) Dillingham House — Sandwich Village

📍 71 Main St, Sandwich, MA 02563

Built in the 1600s, the Dillingham House is one of the oldest on the Cape. In the early 1800s, a sudden series of deaths left the family in grief. Locals claim that sorrow lingers: rocking chairs sway without cause, whispers echo through empty rooms, and candlelight has been spotted moving past second-floor windows. Some say the grieving mother still wanders the halls, searching for the children she lost more than two centuries ago.

2) Sagamore Cemetery — Bourne/Sagamore

📍 Corner of MA-6A & Ben Abbey Rd, Sagamore (Bourne), MA

Set near the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal, this quiet cemetery carries an unsettling history. When the canal was constructed in the early 1900s, graves may have been disturbed. Visitors often describe sudden cold gusts, flickers of blue light among the headstones, and the sharp smell of cigar smoke carried on the wind. Some believe it’s the spirit of a canal worker who perished during construction, forever pacing the edge of his last job site.

3) Colonial House Inn (Now Chapter House) — Yarmouth Port

📍 277 Main St, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675

For centuries, this historic home has witnessed both joy and heartbreak. As the Colonial House Inn, it gained a reputation for spectral activity: the sound of a baby crying in the dead of night, a rocking chair that persistently turned toward a long-bricked-up window, and a pale woman glimpsed near the staircase. Now known as the Chapter House, its walls remain heavy with whispers of the past, and guests still report unsettling experiences.

4) Barnstable House (“House of 11 Ghosts”) — Barnstable Village

📍 3010 Main St, Barnstable, MA 02630

Few houses on Cape Cod are as notorious as the Barnstable House. Over the years, it has been called home by lawyers, innkeepers, and families — but it is best remembered for its restless spirits. The basement once contained a well where a young girl named Lucy drowned, and visitors still hear the patter of her feet or the echo of laughter carried through the halls. Others have spotted figures in colonial garb drifting across the lawn or felt an icy grip on the staircase rail, as if unseen hands reach for company.

5) Old Jail (Old Gaol) — Barnstable

📍 3365 Main St, Barnstable, MA 02630

Constructed in 1690, the Old Jail is one of the oldest surviving wooden jails in America. It once confined pirates, vagrants, and petty criminals in harsh conditions — little food, freezing cells, and rampant disease. Visitors report the clink of chains, disembodied muttering, and a sourceless draft seeping through the walls. Some say a thin, hollow-eyed man in colonial garb still paces the narrow corridors, unable to leave his sentence behind.

6) Capt. Roland Kelley House — Dennis Village

📍 480 Main St, Dennis, MA 02638

Captain Roland Kelley was a sea captain whose ship never returned from its voyage. Soon after, strange events began in his Victorian home: the sound of boots ascending empty stairs, doors that rattled violently in the night, and a stern figure at the foot of the bed. Locals believe the captain himself came home from the sea — not in flesh, but in spirit, unwilling to accept his watery grave.

7) Highland Light (Cape Cod Light) — North Truro

📍 27 Highland Light Rd, North Truro, MA 02652

The oldest lighthouse on Cape Cod overlooks some of the Atlantic’s most dangerous shoals. Dozens of wrecks lie just offshore, and with them countless lost sailors. Visitors speak of phantom footsteps spiraling up the lighthouse stairs, knocks at the keeper’s door, and a woman in white who roams the cliffs with a lantern, endlessly searching for her lover swallowed by the sea. On fog-laden nights, the air feels charged — as though the past is only one step away.

8) “Lady of the Dunes” Vicinity — Race Point, Provincetown

📍 Dunes east of Race Point Ranger Station, Provincetown, MA (approx. 42.076000, –70.203000)

On July 27, 1974, a woman’s body was found in the Provincetown dunes, hands removed and her identity unknown for nearly fifty years. She became known as the “Lady of the Dunes,” a chilling mystery that haunted Cape Cod lore until her name was discovered in 2022. Even so, the dunes remain heavy with silence. Visitors describe the sensation of being followed, the crunch of unseen footsteps in the sand, and fleeting glimpses of a lone woman on the horizon — vanishing as soon as she’s noticed.
